Drive All Night is the first solo CD from Kelly Flint, singer for the hipster, lounge-noir band Dave's True Story. This CD features songs played and written by Kelly (with the exception of "Story In Your Eyes" by the Moody Blues) and is a remarkable departure from the jazzier sound of Dave's True Story.
On this CD, Kelly draws from her earliest exposure to music, when her mother would crank their stereo with the sounds of artists like Glen Campbell, Carole King and Simon & Garfunkel. And though Kelly’s songs have their roots in the folk music songwriter tradition, they don’t come without a twist – “Blood And Bone” and “Cartoon” contain scenes of random menace which are tempered by sympathy for the creatures caught in their grip, whereas “Song For My Soldier” pledges support for a trooper who has returned traumatized from the war—a protest song turned inside-out. This is not so much genre-bending as genre-infiltration, an achievement made easy with support from Jeff Eyrich on upright bass, Gerry Leonard on guitars, and Doug Yowell on drums and percussion.
Dave Cantor describes Kelly's solo work: "Her melodies are beautiful one moment, then, in the next, as pop as anything you might ever hear. And sung with that voice! She is engaged with the world and her take on it is truly unusual and insightful. Though wry and funny at times, her words come from deep places, and she finds the emotional truth in the everyday event, the heartbreaking core in simple acts and moments."
