About This:
Rebel with a cause. While incorporating some of that 1970’s ‘Philadelphia Sound’ into his music, legendary guitarist/vocalist WINSTON GAY is off to a great start. Laying out all of his own background vocals, Winston attributes his ‘chameleon-like’ rubberized voice to his childhood mimicking of TV cartoon characters, and years later, having to sing the missing notes for absentee lead or background vocalists in various singing groups. Beginning with the bouncy ‘JESUS IS ALL YOU NEED’, his seamless high harmonies drill the chorus into your memory. ‘GOD IS GOOD’ is classic ‘gos-pop’ showing Winston’s ability to hold a note and deliver his lyrics with child-like simplicity. ‘MY GOD LOVES YOU’ has that Philadelphia ‘ole-school’ intro, and a definitive ‘Smokey Robinson’ feel, as Winston’s silky voice modulates into the stratosphere at the climax. An album favorite, ‘RUN TO ME’, is a seamless delightful samba with universal appeal. ‘BE SAVED’ is reminiscent of early ‘Prince’ where Winston’s strange harmonies and searing guitar solo make it almost impossible to remain seated through each repeated chorus. ‘CAROL MEDLEY’ is his trio arrangement that begs for more songs to be draped in Winston’s silky voice. ‘SOMEBODY SAID’ is a tapestry of commentary, shapes, sounds and world beats, marking him as a true original in his field. ‘SECURITY’ is dark, soulful, and thought-provoking for contemporary lovers. ‘MORE LIKE YOU’ sounds like a musical prayer, and void of beats and horn samples, it is nothing short of gorgeous. ‘CAME TO TELL YOU’ is a slick arrangement where Winston’s quirky sense of humor and wit always surfaces through the cracks of his melodic preaching. The reprise of the vamp is a mini showcase of his unique guitar synthesizer solos. Lastly, ‘SWEETDEEP’ has a reggae feel to it with Winston’s ‘banjo’ as backdrop. One thing is for sure about this CD; there is never a dull moment. ‘MY GOD LOVES YOU’ is a menagerie of easy melodies with an eternal message suitable for framing.
