For award-winning piano soloist and composer Cody Michaels, “the piano is a way to connect with the mystery of creation and every song is a prayer”.

A former park ranger and farmhand, Cody's unique musical expressions inspire comparisons to the likes of Beethoven, George Winston, Keith Jarrett and Phish's Page McConnell. Also a dynamic storyteller and poet, his mesmerizing performances celebrate the wonders of nature, simple living, and the power of the human spirit.

Now based in Vermont's "Northeast Kingdom", Cody grew up in southeastern New Hampshire where he began playing the piano at an early age. His jazz pianist father was his first inspiration, and he also studied classical. But his intuitive approach and wide influences (ranging from classical, jazz, and contemporary instrumental, to folk, popular, rock, and world music) have fostered a style that resists easy categorization.

Cody studied environmental science at the University of New Hampshire, spending much of his free time exploring in New Hampshire's fabled White Mountains (a region he considers to be his "spiritual home"). After college, he headed West to the Colorado Rockies for much of the 1980's, before returning to the White Mountains in 1988 to work for as a backcountry caretaker for the Appalachian Mountain Club. In the early 90's, Cody was as an Appalachian Trail caretaker in Maine, and in the mid-90's he was a wilderness ranger for the US Forest Service in Virginia, Colorado, and Arizona.

Through it all, Cody continuously played the piano as “an emotional, spiritual outlet”. He first appeared in public while in Telluride, Colorado during the mid-80's, warming up crowds before movies at the Nugget Theater. He occasionally played for restaurants and clubs in the various places he spent time in. Ultimately, a long walk on the Appalachian Trail in 1997 gave Cody the clarity to dedicate his life to being a musician.

During the late 90's, Cody played piano for a number of resorts, restaurants, cafes, and clubs in New England, North Carolina, Colorado, and Leipzig, Germany. In 2001, he released his first CD of original works for solo piano, "A Creation Prayer", to critical acclaim, and gave his first concert. Three more highly praised CD's have followed: "Primum Non Nocere" (2004), "Autumn Suite" (2007), and "Winter Suite" (2009), which received an inViTe "Tammy Award" for "Best Vermont Instrumental Album of 2009".

Over the past decade, Cody has given more than 250 concerts and school programs across the northeast USA and beyond. Praised equally for his imaginative, technically precise playing and his engaging, thought provoking stage presence, he has emerged as one of New England's fine "indie" performing artists.

Cody's CD's are also available at his appearances. His MP3's are also available @ i-tunes, Rhapsody, and e-music.

What People Are Saying About Cody:

"Cody Michaels' sensitivity to the natural world is the thread that binds together his original compositions. His fascinating music reaches under the surface of things in many ways, and examines the pulse and chore of what lies beneath, while his interactions with the audience create an intimacy that can make a full hall feel like a one-on-one conversation."
(Jackson Evans, Executive Director; Vergennes Opera House, VT)

"Magic... raw earthen beauty, glorious chords and progressions - the most beautiful piano music I have ever seen live."
(Rachel Carter, VermontVibes)

"Michaels plays with much feeling and a keen sense of how sound and sight intermingle. Here is an example of an artist whose sensibilities are well connected to the world around him. There will no doubt be comparisons to George Winston... Michaels seems no less talented and, if anything, sounds more like Keith Jarrett"
(Art Edelstein, The Times Argus / Barre-Montpelier, VT)

"Michaels' playing is powerful, challenging, and highly expressive. He courageously takes the listener to the who-knows-where of his passions."
(Jane Wilcox Hively, Editor; Mountain Streams Gazette, NH)

"Michaels' music is truly entrancing... the finesse emanating from his piano is as natural as breath. All is expressed with a melodic precision capable only of those who genuinely believe in every note they play."
(James S. Pike; Face Magazine, ME)

"Michaels' compositions and musical skill were wonderful, and he was a delight to work with. He is a fine musician, and he spoke eloquently to his listeners, painting pictures that were illustrated by his songs."
(Mary Laury, Executive Director; "Schoodic Arts For All"; Winter Harbor, ME)

"Cody is a talented gentleman with a gift for music that touches the heart and mind."
(Nancy McHugh, Vermont Festival of The Arts)

"Cody's music, stories, and poetry inspired our student's imaginations. Their time with him was fun and productive."
(Patricia Passmore Alley, President; Greensboro Wonder and Wisdom School, VT)

"Most of all, it is Michaels' elegant touch and deep commitment to melodic communication that hold the listener rapt."
(Kevin McNeil Brown, Buch Speiler Music; Montpelier, VT)

"Do yourself a favor: discover Cody Michaels... he captures the essence of spirit and beauty of nature as few before"
(Lucky Clark, The Cool News; North Conway, NH)

"Hello. I just read your review of Cody Michaels' CD at your website, and I want to let you know that his musicianship is even more enjoyable and rich in person."
(Emily, EnjoyTheMusic.com "Letters To Us")
