A native of the Boston area, Gary Girouard (also known as "G") grew up on an eclectic mix of classical and 80's pop & rock, from Debussy to Pink Floyd. In the 90's, following a bout with meningitis and a narrow escape from death, his music turned from garage band grunge to introspective solo piano.
Girouard spent a year living abroad in Milan, Italy, writing piano compositions while traveling extensively through Europe. Upon returning to the States, Girouard began performing regularly at clubs, bars and restaurants in and around the Boston area. By 1998, Girouard was gaining widespread recognition as an expressive composer with a gift for memorable melodies. During this same period, he launched a marketing and distribution company called Galileo Music Corporation - a company devoted exclusively to the piano and piano music. As the company grew, Girouard was becoming a recognized leader in the piano business - and an expert in piano-related technology.
In 2004, Girouard is poised to release his self-produced debut solo piano album - The Naked Piano. This album is a collection of compositions written in a span of 15 years and blends classical, new age and pop influences into what the editor of Boston Live hails as "a masterpiece...a testament to the gracious sounds of a fluid live recording". Wilton Syckes, President of the Piano Travelers Association heralds The Naked Piano as "the most expressive, relaxing piano music I have ever experienced...as one with a lifetime love of music, I could listen to these compositions for a lifetime".
"I wanted this album to sound natural and pure," G smiles "the piano is a beautiful instrument that can stand on its own without any artificial embellishments"
The Naked Piano was recorded on a 9' concert grand Steinway - recognized by many as the standard by which all other pianos are compared. The recordings were made in historic Steinert Hall - in downtown Boston - a place where Girouard began his piano career in 1991. Steinert Hall was closed to the public in 1942 following the Coconut Grove fire and revised building codes. However, in its day it hosted performances by the top pianists (including Rachmaninov and Hoffman) of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Girouard comments "The concert hall that remains today is a splendid reminder of life in the Elizabethan era. The resonant acoustics and crumbling plaster provided the perfect backdrop and environment for The Naked Piano recordings".
Girouard has also attached a worthy cause to The Naked Piano album - donating a portion of each CD sale to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp - a special place in Ashford, CT that provides a true camp experience for children with cancer and serious blood disorders - a place where Girouard worked as a volunteer session counselor between 1990 and 1999.
Quotes
"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgement will be surer; since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgement" - Leonardo DaVinci
