Nick Snaden

bio tour schedule official site

Artist:
Born to musical parents and educated in his early years at a Convent
School in Portishead, England, Nick Snaden wrote his first song at the
age of seven, which he freely admits was 'totally crap'. As a child,
there was always a radio on in the house playing classical music all
day. Winter evenings were often spent with the rest of the family
singing old songs, with his parents playing the accompaniment on piano
and violin. Thirteen years of sexual, physical and emotional abuse at
the hands of his father and an Uncle from the age of four onwards left
Nick with severe problems concerning his self-image and depression, and
these subjects have featured heavily in his songwriting over the years.
He records his songs in the living room of his council flat and lives
on disability benefits because of long-term depression but even so,
some of his songs display a sharp sense of humour and dry wit, while
other songs are almost too painful or poignant to listen to.
In the early 1990's Nick worked in Alma Vale Studio studio in Bristol
recording, amongst others, two albums for the local group 'Airbus', who
in turn went on to assist the trip-hop outfit 'Portishead' with the
recording of their platinum-selling album 'Dummy'.
Nick's own musical influences range from rock through to folk,
classical, metal, and a love of vocal harmonies. Although he is a
superb and witty conversationalist with deep spiritual insights, Nick
Snaden is reclusive and refuses to play live. Over the last three years
he has been attempting to heal the scars of his troubled childhood by
embracing instead of running away from his nightly dreams and
nightmares and putting them into a blog; at the last count 300+ dreams
have been blogged and analysed, and this (along with his songwriting)
is the subject of a film documentary by Vianet Babin called 'Discord
and Harmony'. A marked change in Nick's songs has occured over the last
two years, with a more hopeful and lighter perspective on life being
expressed in his lyrics. He puts this down to the influence of his
dreams and the resulting release of long-term negative emotions. A
brief exerpt of Vianet Babin's film can be found at
http://www.librefilms.com/#/nick28/4526074674 and the full-length edit
is due to be broadcast on terrestrial TV in the UK sometime in 2009.
Nick Snaden cites his musical influences as being rock, classical and
choir music with a dash of folk and country rock. Amongst others, he
lists his musical influences as The Beatles, Nick Drake, Klaatu,
Hendrix, classical and choir music, and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils
(but not their 'Yee-hah! thigh-slapping stuff', as he puts it). He
spends his time writing and recording music, reading, going for walks
across the fields near his council flat, analysing his dreams and
'doing nothing much'. He intends to clear a large backlog of
half-written songs, some dating back to when he was twelve years old,
and to continue dreaming until his process of self-healing is complete:
'One day it would be nice to fear life less than I fear death'.
